A number of Golden Triangle companies are listed in Arkansas Business' annual "Book of Lists," which ranks a variety of companies based on revenues, employment, and other factors.
Here is a synopsis of those companies:
The Golden Triangle is home to the largest industrial park in Arkansas.
Highland Industrial Park in East Camden comprises 17,000 acres, with 12,000 available for new industry or expansions.
Some of the park's tenants are ARQUEST, Atlantic Research Corp., BEI Defense Systems and Loral Vaught Systems.
The Del-Tin fiberboard plant in El Dorado ranks as the No. 2 plant construction project at $25 million. The general contractor is Kinco Inc. of Little Rock. Total project cost is $100 million.
ConAgra Inc. is the second-largest manufacturing employer in the state with 6,000 workers, and El Dorado is the site of major operations.
Georgia-Pacific Corp., which also has an El Dorado plant, ranks No.4 with 4,767 employees.
Other major manufacturing employers with Golden Triangle ties include No.11 Cooper Tire & Rubber Co., with 2,007 employees in Arkansas and a plant in El Dorado, and No.19 Alumax Inc., with 1,528 employees in Arkansas and a plant in Magnolia.
Two Golden Triangle banks are among the 25 largest in Arkansas based on rankings by total assets as of September 30, 1994.
The First National Bank of El Dorado reported assets of $291.6 million and ranked No.21. The bank has 91 employees and five locations.
Farmers Bank & Trust Co. of Magnolia reported assets of $211.8 million and ranked No.23. The bank has 66 employees and five locations.
In rankings based on annual net income, First National was listed at No.13 with $3.5 million for the year ended December 1996.
In rankings based on return on average equity, Farmers Bank ranked No.16 with a 15.63 percent return while First National was at No.21 with a 16.17 percent return. In addition, First National Bank of Magnolia made the list at No.26 with a return of 13.08 percent.
River Valley Community Credit Union ranks ninth in Arkansas based on 1994 assets of $18 million. River Valley reported a 1.34 percent return on assets and a membership of 3,735.
First United Bancshares Inc. of El Dorado with banks in Camden & Magnolia ranks No.16 among mortgage lenders in Arkansas, with $70.2 million in loans recorded during 1996.
First United originated $74.9 million in loans, purchased $1.6 million in mortgages and serviced $212 million in mortgage loans.
First Financial Bank of El Dorado ranks No. 1 in Small Business Loans in Arkansas, with $7.8 million in loans recorded in 1996.
El Dorado Country Club has 565 members and ranks 15th among the largest country clubs in Arkansas.
The facility has an 18-hole golf course, tennis courts, and dining facilities. Its initiation fee is $1,025 and the monthly dues are $98.
Magnolia is the home of Smitty's Food Stores Inc., which ranks 11th in revenues among grocery chains operating in Arkansas.
Smitty's had an estimated $36.2 million in sales in 1994 at its 10 locations. The chain employs 325 people, and its president is Fred T. Smith.
The El Dorado News-Times is Arkansas' 12th-largest daily newspaper with a circulation of 11,000. The company recently began publishing The South Arkansas Sunday News which features news from all three communities and combined editorial and advertising. The newspaper is delivered on Sunday to subscribers in each Golden Triangle community.
The News-Times is actually one of three daily newspapers in the Golden Triangle, and all are published by Walter Hussman Jr. and WEHCO Media Inc. The other two are The Camden News - the flagship newspaper of the Hussman chain - with a circulation of 4,533 and the Magnolia Banner-News with a circulation of 4,469.
El Dorado Chamber ranks No. 6 in Arkansas with 782 members.
Computer Support Group ranks 10th in Arkansas with 16 employees.
Tac Equipment Co. of Camden employs 37 people at two locations. It ranks No.14 on the list of heavy equipment dealers in the state.
Led by Cecil Smith, the firm specializes in forestry and construction equipment. Its major brands are Deere & Co., Rivinius, and Prentice.
Murphy Oil Corp. ranks fourth in the state in net income and sixth in annual revenues.
First United Bancshares Inc. is the second-largest publicly held bank holding company in Arkansas with assets of more than $1.6 billion.
Ouachita Electric Cooperative Corp. ranks No.15 among the electric companies serving Arkansas.
Ouachita reported operating revenues of $15.2 million in 1993 with 8,795 customers.
The Medical Center of South Arkansas in El Dorado is ranked the 16th-largest hospital in Arkansas among 96 facilities based on net income.
MCSA has 286 beds with an occupancy rate of 45.52 percent. Its revenues for the fiscal year ended June 1994 were $61.9 million, with net income of $2.8 million.
Ouachita County Hospital ranks No.40. The 156-bed facility had an occupancy rate of 30.26 percent, revenues $21.7 million and net income of $666,261.
Magnolia Hospital is ranked 44th. The 80-bed operation had revenues of $21.3 million and net income of $525,715.
Magnolia is the home of two of Arkansas' largest nursing homes, and both are owned by Beverly Enterprises Inc. of Fort Smith.
Meadowbrook Lodge is the sixth most profitable nursing home in Arkansas, while Magnolia Manor Nursing Center ranks 10th.
Meadowbrook's 1994 revenues totaled $2.7 million, with 1994 net income of $606,911. Magnolia Manor's 1994 were $2.6 million, with 1994 net income of $517,057.
Also included in the rankings are Oak Ridge Nursing Home of El
Dorado, No.19, with $3.6 million in revenues and $391,554 in net income;
Leisure Lodge of Camden, No.36, with $2.3 million in revenues and
$278,185 in net income; East Manor Nursing Center (also owned by
Beverly), No.46, with $1.7 million in revenues and $243,585 in net
income.
